Basin wrench for plumbing and installation

A basin wrench helps you reach tap nuts, traps and drains in the cramped space behind a basin or hand sink. That lets you tighten and loosen connections where an ordinary spanner simply cannot fit. The long shaft with a pivoting or right-angled head grips the nut straight from below, so you can apply force even with limited room.

Extending and telescopic versions bridge different depths, and some have an illuminated head for visibility in dark cabinets. When choosing, watch the gripping capacity, the length of the shaft and whether the head is self-clamping for one-handed use. For varied plumbing work choose a version with a wide adjustment range, so one wrench covers several sizes.

A sturdy build prevents slipping on rusted-on nuts. Brands such as Gedore, Ridgid, Milwaukee and Stanley supply basin wrenches for plumbers and installers. That way you fit taps and drains smoothly, even where the space is minimal.
