Spare handles for axes, hatchets and pickaxes
A cracked or loose handle is no reason to write off an axe. The head is the expensive part and lasts decades in normal use, while the handle is the wearing part that takes the shock. Fitting a new axe handle costs little time and gives you a fully serviceable tool again.
Choose the material first. Ash flexes slightly and noticeably damps the blow in wrist and elbow, which counts when you split all day. It does need watching for drying out and splitting. Fibreglass takes up no moisture, stays dimensionally stable and survives an overstrike against the handle better, but gives harder feedback in the hand.
Length follows. Handles run here from around 360 to 900 mm: short handles for one handed work and fine splitting, long handles for two handed splitting and for pickaxes, where the extra leverage does the work. Always measure the eye of your head, because that decides whether the handle fits at all. BAHCO supplies handles by series, so match head and handle on the series marking rather than by eye. The same principle applies to hammers, and those sit under hammer handle.
