Adaptors between a bit holder and a socket drive

A socket adaptor couples two drives that do not fit each other, usually a 1/4" hex bit holder to a square socket drive. With one you put sockets on a cordless screwdriver or an impact driver without reaching for a separate ratchet, and you run the same socket set on several machines.

Sizing decides everything. The input side matches the holder on the machine or the ratchet, the output side the square of the socket: 1/4", 3/8" or 1/2". An adaptor that steps up from a small input to a large socket lets you put more torque through the joint than it can take, so match the adaptor to the torque of the machine and not to the socket that happens to be at hand.

Watch length and retention as well. Short adaptors keep the overall length down in an engine bay or between pipe runs, while longer versions bridge a recessed bolt. A detent ball holds the socket on when working overhead, and an adaptor without retention drops it. For impact work an impact rated version is needed, because an ordinary bit adaptor breaks on the first heavy bolt. More reach comes from an extension, and a reducer adapter converts square to square.
