Depressed centre grinding discs by size, grain and bore

A grinding disc removes stock fast where a finishing abrasive would only refine a surface: dressing weld beads, chamfering plate edges, cleaning castings and taking down proud fasteners. Grain type sets the match to the workpiece. Aluminium oxide is the general purpose choice on structural steel, zirconia alumina cuts cooler and lasts longer under pressure, and ceramic grain holds its edge on stainless and other work-hardening alloys where heat tint is a problem.

Thickness is the trade-off between removal rate and control, with 6 to 7 mm depressed centre discs doing the everyday work and thinner ones blurring into cutting. Match the diameter to the machine and never above it, and check that the maximum operating speed printed on the disc exceeds the grinder's no-load speed. Standard angle grinders take a 22.23 mm bore. Work at a shallow angle of roughly 20 to 30 degrees, keep the guard fitted, and retire any disc that has been dropped.
