Hand reamers for finishing a drilled hole to size

A hand reamer finishes a pre-drilled hole to exact size and leaves a smooth wall. You turn it by hand through a tap wrench on the square drive, which keeps the cutting speed entirely under control. That is the difference with machine reaming: slow, controlled, and without the tool grabbing.

The versions here are HSS and follow the common DIN standard for hand reamers, with an H7 tolerance on the nominal size. H7 is the usual fit for dowel pins and bearing seats among other things, where the hole has to be accurate to within hundredths of a millimetre.

Choose the reamer on the finished size of the hole, not on the drill diameter. Leave only a small allowance beforehand, because a hand reamer takes off little material and will seize as soon as you let it cut too much. Phantom covers a size range that runs across metric as well as inch sizes, so existing fitting work can be matched. Use cutting oil, always turn clockwise, and withdraw the reamer while it is still turning. The full range for reaming sits one level up.
