Oils for lubrication, chains and assembly

Oil keeps moving parts apart, and the grade decides whether a machine runs cool or wears itself out. Chain oil is formulated to cling under centrifugal force, so it stays on a saw bar or a drive chain instead of being thrown off at speed. Penetrating grades do the opposite: low viscosity lets them creep into seized threads, corroded pins and rusted fasteners, then release them without heat or damage.

Between those extremes sit universal lubricants for hinges, slides and linkages, and additives that raise the load-carrying capacity of an existing fill. Match viscosity to the temperature and the clearance, because a thick grade in a fine mechanism drags as badly as a dry one binds.

Format matters on site. An aerosol reaches an assembly you cannot dismantle, while bottles and larger containers are cheaper per litre for scheduled servicing. Where a film has to stay put under load or in the open, grease is the better answer, and metalworking calls for a dedicated cutting oil.
