Guide bushes for template routing with a router
A guide bush is the sleeve mounted under the router base that runs along a template. The cutter follows the pattern at a fixed distance, so the same shape can be repeated as often as needed: recesses for hinges and locks, door pulls, slots in batch work and radii that never come out identical by hand.
Two dimensions decide the result. The outside diameter of the bush, here from around 8 to 40 mm, has to suit both the template and the opening in the base plate. The difference between bush diameter and cutter diameter is the offset the template is set out with, and it has to be calculated in advance. Leave it out and every recess comes out structurally too wide or too tight.
Guide bushes are machine specific. Festool, Makita, DeWalt, Bosch, HiKOKI and Metabo each supply bushes matched to their own base plates. Check the base plate type of your router before ordering, because a bush from another brand rarely fits without an adapter. The matching cutting tools sit under tapping and milling.
