Extension bars for sockets and ratchets

An extension bridges the distance between the ratchet and the socket, so you reach a bolt that sits recessed or behind an obstacle. It is the part that goes missing most often and gets replaced most often, because which length you need changes with every job.

Start from the drive size, since the extension has to fit at both ends: on your ratchet and on the socket. A quarter inch is meant for fine assembly work, a half inch for maintenance on chassis, machines and heavier bolts. Then choose the length. Short pieces keep the torque straight and the feel direct, while versions of 250 mm and longer are what you need on deeply buried fixings. The longer the piece, the more twist you lose on the way.

Finally, watch the version. A lockable model holds the socket when you work overhead, a ball detent swaps faster, and a piece that flexes at an angle reaches bolts that do not line up with the ratchet. Impact-rated versions belong on impact wrenches.

If you switch between drive sizes, look at the reducer adapter or the socket adaptor.
