LED handheld lamps for workshop and service van

A handheld lamp puts light where you are working, with no stand and no extension lead to drag along. LED has pushed the filament and the compact fluorescent bulb out of this category: efficiency is higher, the head stays cool and a drop usually leaves the lamp intact. The range runs from slim inspection lamps that fit between two components to spotlights that light a whole bay, and lamps built to hang under an open bonnet.

The first decision is the power source. If you already work with cordless tools, pick a lamp on the same battery platform so the packs stay interchangeable. Battery voltages across this class run from 10.8V through 12V, 14.4V, 18V and 24V up to 40V, and many lamps are supplied without battery and charger. After that, look at output, beam shape and mounting: a wide beam for overview, a narrow beam for reach, and a hook or magnet so you can let go of the lamp and keep both hands free.
