Cordless power tools: which brand should you choose?

Product features are not the only factors that play a role when we purchase tools or anything else. We often already have a preference for a certain brand. Manufacturers know how significant ‘brand experience’ is, and their marketing is aimed mainly at strengthening their brand. Say, you are looking for a cordless drill and have to choose from hundreds of models from dozens of brands. How do you find the machine that best meets your needs?

The biggest difference between hobby brands and professional brands

Power tools can be divided into two categories: machines for the hobby market and the professional market. Black and Decker, for example, is a brand that mainly focuses on hobbyists. Bosch divides its product range into machines for the hobby segment and professionals. In the hardware store, you will find several other brands of drills and power tools for remarkably attractive prices. A hobby brand is a good choice if you tend to use such a machine only a few times a year. Why would you pay for more than you need? However, it is wiser to choose a brand that professionals work with if you demand a little more from your tools. Professional tools are more robust and ergonomic and usually have better warranty conditions. At Klium, we only sell professional brands. Here we evaluate many and inform you of the — often minor — differences.

Bosch logo

Bosch makes two different types of power tools: Bosch Green for do-it-yourselfers and Bosch Blue for professionals. The blue tools have more torque and power, batteries that last longer and a longer warranty period. In the Bosch Blue range, you will find literally every type of electric and battery tool for an average price compared to other professional brands.

Ryobi sanders

The power tools from the Japanese manufacturer Ryobi are among the cheapest professional machines. Prices range from entry-level to intermediate. The great strength of Ryobi is the cordless tools with 18V batteries.

Milwaukee logo

Milwaukee is a brand of the same owner as Ryobi: Techtronic Industries, which also includes AEG and Hoover. Milwaukee tools are more expensive than average and often the choice of discerning professionals. Milwaukee’s battery range, in particular, is very extensive, with all kinds of drills, wrenches, ratchets, saws, grinders, planers and much more.

Makita logo

Makita tools are priced slightly higher than average. This Japanese brand is the absolute top in electric and battery tools, favoured by many professional users. Longevity, ergonomics and the choice of battery options are prominent strengths of Makita.

Festool logo

Festool also belongs to the top segment when we look at the price. The strength of this German brand lies mainly in its great diversification. Festool makes specific tools for various sectors such as industry, construction, painters, carpenters and body repairers.

DeWalt logo

DeWalt is the brand with which owner Black and Decker focus on the professional market. The tools of this American manufacturer fall into the average price range. DeWalt mainly makes tools for the construction and woodworking industry and has an extensive range of cordless tools with both 12V and 18V batteries.

Stick to your brand

There can be all kinds of reasons for choosing a brand: from specialization in a certain segment to the colour of the tools. The objective differences between professional tool brands are often small and comparable in performance. Due to the interchangeable batteries, it is wise to stick to one brand for all your power tools — if you are satisfied with them.
