Tips for unclogging the sink

If the sink in the kitchen or in the bathroom is clogged, wait before calling the plumber and first try the 4 methods below to unclog the sink. Clearing a clogged sink is, in most cases, quite easy to remedy.

Is the sink in the kitchen or the bathroom clogged? You might have checked to see if something was blocking the drain hole, but even after removing all the debris from the sink and drain, the water continues to fill the sink. Before calling the plumber, here are four ways you can unclog the sink yourself first.

Use baking soda and vinegar.

Using baking soda along with vinegar is a natural alternative to using chemical drain cleaners on blocked drains. You probably already have soda and vinegar in the kitchen, and we recommend trying this method before opting for chemical products. The use of natural products is always favored, as this will not affect your drains as much.

Remove the water from the sink, pour a cup of baking soda down the drain, and use a spoon or something similar to spread it around. Then, pour a cup of white vinegar down the drain hole. If the sink has a lid, put it on the drain to seal the opening and leave it there for 20 minutes. Finally, pour boiling water into the sink to rinse everything.

Tip: This solution may not work the first time you try it and requires several attempts to unclog the sink.

Use a chemical drain cleaner.

If using baking soda and vinegar didn’t work, a chemical or enzymatic cleaner can help you get the job done. The most important thing is to choose a product that will not affect your drains and make the problem worse. However, which product is the most appropriate to use? Different cleaners work for different types and severity of blockages.

Chemical to unclog pipes

The Griffon unblocker will solve the problem in most cases, regardless of what caused the blockage. It contains aluminum-coated unblocking beads for removing blockages, such as hair, soap, fat, and food residues, from the drainage of sinks, shower trays, and bathtubs. This product works effectively, quickly and has a handy sprinkler.

Tip: Do not use the plunger with a wooden handle after pouring a chemical drain cleaner into the sink; you want to avoid getting this product on the face.

Cleaning the siphon

If none of the solutions above help, you will have to loosen and clean the siphon under the sink. Carefully open the screw cap under the siphon and loosen all the pieces. Before removing the siphon, put a bucket under it to catch the residue and water that will be released once you unscrew it. Remove the dirty water and other residues from the siphon and use a brush to clean everything. Once you have cleaned the siphon, you can reattach it to the bottom of the sink.

Tip: Try to clean the siphon twice a year, even if it is not clogged.

Use an unclogging machine.

If a chemical drain cleaner has also failed to clear the sink, you can choose to purchase an unclogging machine. Although an unclogging machine is not cheap, it is a good investment if you have frequent clogging problems and will not be more expensive than hiring a plumber each time. And guess what, this is what plumbers use to unclog sinks anyway. If you have room in the house to store an unclogging machine, it may be worth buying your own and saving money in the long run.

Quality brand Milwaukee has several models of unclogging machines that are small enough to store and powerful enough to clear most sinks. The Milwaukee M12 BDC8-202C has a user-friendly design and offers the benefits of both portable and floor-based drain cleaners in one machine. Thanks to the independence of an electrical power supply, this model is also very flexible and mobile.

Tip: If you don’t have an unclogging machine at home and need one immediately, order one now since in most cases, products are delivered the very next day.

Prevent clogging

Now that the sink is draining properly, it is essential to make sure the sink does not get stuck again. The only thing you can do is avoid pouring or leaving certain products and waste residues in the sink. One of the biggest reasons the drain gets clogged is pouring fats and oils down the drain. Never leave fats and oils in the drain and always recycle them. In addition, to prevent any further blockages, use a sink waste filter to ensure that food residues do not end up in the drain.
