The many uses of a hot air gun

Customized hot air

With a professional quality hot air gun you can accurately control the temperature. The better hot air guns are also supplied with several nozzles, which allow the air to come out of the device in various ways. By mounting the right nozzle, you can optimally control the air flow for every job.

  • A reduction nozzle concentrates the air flow and is intended for work that requires heating of a specific point.
  • A reflector nozzle is useful for heating a workpiece all around. Applications include bending PVC pipes, soldering copper pipes and applying heat shrink tubing. https://www.klium.be/672401-large/makita-p-71445-reflecterend-mondstuk-klium.jpg
  • A surface nozzle spreads the heat and is useful, for example, for burning off paint or removing glue residues. https://www.klium.be/15384-large/bosch-haaks-mondstuk-80-mm-335-mm-klium.jpg
  • A glass protection nozzle diverts the heat from the window when you burn paint from a window frame.

You can do all this with a hot air gun

A hot air gun is one of the most versatile devices in your toolbox. To give you an idea where it can come in handy, we list a number of applications:

  • Burning off old paint layers. By far the most common function of the hot air gun. By heating the paint or varnish, you can easily remove it with a paint scraper. Use a surface nozzle to spread the air flow.
  • Strip and bundle cables. With the reflector nozzle, you can easily remove cable insulation and bundle cables.
  • Glue. Hot melt glue loses its connection force when it cools. If you want to glue larger surfaces with this commonly used type of glue, you can keep it fluid with hot air.
  • Remove glue. A hot air gun is also useful for the reverse. All possible adhesive connections can be released with hot air. For example, floor coverings, decorative foil or veneer edges. Mount the surface nozzle for a wide spread of the air flow.
  • Bend anything and everything. PVC pipes, copper pipes, wood … various materials can be bent into the desired shape when heated. Use the reflector nozzle to heat the workpiece evenly all around. Tip: make wood wet through and through before you put the hot air gun on it.
  • Loosen solder connections. You can release soldered copper pipes at 600 ° C. Use the reduction nozzle for a concentrated heat jet. For loosening electronic components on printed circuit boards, it is better not to go higher than 400 ° C, because higher temperatures are disastrous for a semiconductor.
  • Weld pond liner. Use the surface nozzle to heat the overlapping sheets of foil and press them down with a pressure roller.
  • Light the barbecue. This job can also be done with a hot air gun. The same applies to the fireplace. And talking about the barbecue: you can easily wipe off those caked remains on the grid after you have just put the hot air gun on it.
  • Defrost the refrigerator. Another original application of hot air. Do this at a low-temperature setting so as not to distort the plastic material of the inner lining.
  • Remove weeds. That hard-to-get weed between the terrace tiles doesn’t stand a chance against a concentrated treatment from the reduction nozzle of a hot air gun.
  • Clean. Paint and glue on your tools, sticker residues, dirty stove panes … all kinds of stubborn dirt can easily be removed after heating.
  • Disinfect. At 500 ° C, most germs and bacteria die. For example, you can use a hot air gun for environmentally friendly disinfection of potting soil, dog houses or aviaries.
  • Fix starting problems. Lawnmowers and chainsaws sometimes start badly if you have not used them for a long time. Warming up a little with the hot air gun at a low temperature may help.

Work safely with a hot air gun

The air flow from a hot air gun is hot enough to cause a fire, so be especially careful when working with, or near, easily flammable materials. Never touch copper pipes with bare hands when you are working them with a hot air gun, they will get hot at lightning speed. This applies to most metals. If you use work gloves, prefer good quality leather gloves instead of plastic. And of course you already understood that it is not a brilliant idea to use your hot air gun as a hairdryer.
