pas@work, from hobby handyman to all-rounder professional

Three years ago, Pascal Stuvel from Almere in the Netherlands took the biggest step of his life. The field salesman quit his job and registered with the Chamber of Commerce as an all-rounder handyman pas@work. However, it was a decision that did not come out of the blue as he always did odd jobs with a great enthusiasm with friends, family. In fact, after purchasing his own house, he completely stripped it and, in his own words — transformed it into a palace.

“This is where I gained my first basic knowledge,” Pascal recalls. “My eagerness to learn made my jobs more and more complex, and I noticed more and more that DIY was my real passion and not in the world of sales.” The first customers were mainly acquaintances, but soon after that, it all accelerated.

The emphasis is on ‘all-rounder’.

Hobby handymen are by definition not specialists. The diversity of the work in house and garden means that you have to be rather versatile. Also, as a professional, Pascal is by no means picky about the work he takes on. From hanging lamps or assembling a bookshelf to plumbing and electrical installations, and from painting to complete renovations — companies and individuals can call on pas@work for a wide range of large and small jobs.

Pascal received more and more assignments mainly through word of mouth and social media. Nowadays, his agenda is always full for at least four to six months. He comments on his busy schedule: “I always treat my customers the way I want to be treated myself. This means, among other things: being on time, keeping to your agreements, cleaning up your mess at the end of each day, being transparent, thinking along, being flexible, delivering good work for a reasonable price, no nasty surprises afterwards, discussing everything. I once went to see a job with a new customer. The first thing they said to me was, ‘We hope you can restore our confidence in handymen.’ That worked out, and I recently completed my fourth assignment there.”

Pascal has built his own workplace and furnished it with equipment and tools from professional A-brands. Here, Pascal makes custom furniture for his customers, among other things. “It’s a cliché, but good tools are indeed half the battle. The other half is determined by the craftsman, of course.” We can add the third half to this: passion. Pascal Stuvel has followed his heart, and a happy handyman makes happy customers. His life lesson is simple and valuable: “Believe in yourself. You can often do more than you think.”
