3 rotary hammers in 3 price ranges compared

A rotary hammer is for heavy work — drilling or chiseling in concrete, for example, where a regular or impact drill fails to work. Because a rotary hammer is relatively heavy, ergonomic features are essential to make working easier.

How does a rotary hammer work?

The difference between a rotary hammer and an impact drill is the transmission of the impact force. In a rotary hammer, the impact force is caused by a pneumatic piston that builds up air pressure. Unlike an impact drill, the impact is transferred directly to the drill. The force with which this happens is much greater than the impact function of an impact drill. That makes the rotary hammer suitable for the toughest work. Many rotary hammers also have a chiselling function. To enable the hammer only, you can turn off the rotary motion. The chisel function is most useful when making slots for pipes or breaking out tiles, for example.

Bosch Uneo rotary hammer

This model from Bosch is more or less an outsider, with its price of just over 100 euros. What do you get for this money? You’ll need to buy the battery and charger separately, but if you already own other Bosch battery tools, the battery is interchangeable, making this simple tool a good choice. With a weight of 1.2 kg, it is light for a rotary hammer. This model is equipped with a function switch for various applications, such as pneumatic hammering, drilling, and screwdriving. The SDS quick keyless chuck allows quick and easy accessory changes.

Festool BHC 18-BASIC

The brushless, maintenance-free EC-TEC motor of this Festool machine guarantees a long service life. In addition, it is mainly the ergonomic properties that make this machine attractive for professional and long-term use. The vibration damping absorbs the impact energy before it is transferred to the hands, allowing you to work with it for a long time without getting tired. For dust-free working, the battery pack communicates via Bluetooth® with the Bluetooth® module of the CLEANTEC mobile dust extractor. The Festool BHC 18-BASIC also comes in a robust Systainer, making it an excellent choice for professionals and demanding do-it-yourselfers.

Spit Spibull

We chose this rotary hammer from Spit from the higher segment. This powerful and heavy – 4 kg including battery – machine is suitable for the most demanding applications, such as installing anchors in all possible materials. Drill holes of up to 20 mm in reinforced concrete are possible with the supplied SDS plus drills. The Spit Spibull comes in a systainer, including two 36V / 6.2 Ah batteries, a battery charger, and an extra handle. Thanks to the large battery capacity, the number of battery changes is limited, and work can continue for a long time with the same battery.
